How to tie the fender lanyard knot

15 March 2007

Our fenders can always be made to fit—they’re the only ones available with adjustable lanyards. To change the length, you untie the stopper knot at the bottom, shorten or lengthen the lanyard as needed, retie the knot and tuck the loose end back inside the hollow center of the fender.

You probably already know how to tie a stopper knot, such as a Figure-Eight. To tie off our fender lanyards, we prefer the knot to which Clifford Ashley gave the rather undignified name, “Tweenie” (ABOK#525)*. It has the useful characteristic that the bitter end emerges at an angle that makes it easy to tuck back into the fender. It’s also just a bit bulkier than a Figure-Eight.

Here’s how to tie it:

*ABOK refers to the Ashley Book Of Knots, the definitive guide to all things knot, written by Clifford W. Ashley. It identifies more than 3,900 knots and gives each a unique number. Ashley called #525 the “Tweenie” because its structure falls somewhere between a Figure-Eight and an Oysterman’s Stopper knot.
